Managing Your Portfolio
Effective portfolio management is essential for long-term trading success. This tutorial covers how to monitor positions, manage risk across multiple trades, track performance, and make informed decisions about your trading portfolio.
Don't manage trades in isolation. Always consider how each position affects your overall portfolio risk and exposure.
Understanding Portfolio Management
Portfolio management involves:
- 📊 Monitoring all open positions
- ⚖️ Balancing risk across trades
- 📈 Tracking performance metrics
- 🎯 Making adjustment decisions
- 💼 Diversifying exposure

Account Summary
Key Metrics
| Metric | Description | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Balance | Account cash (realised) | Starting balance + closed P&L |
| Equity | Current value | Balance + unrealised P&L |
| Margin Used | Capital held for positions | Sum of margin requirements |
| Free Margin | Available for new trades | Equity - Margin Used |
| Margin Level | Account health | (Equity / Margin Used) × 100% |
Understanding Margin Level
| Margin Level | Status | Action |
|---|---|---|
| > 200% | Healthy | Normal trading |
| 100-200% | Caution | Consider reducing exposure |
| 50-100% | Warning | Close some positions |
| < 50% | Danger | Risk of margin call |
If margin level falls below your broker's threshold (often 50-100%), they may automatically close positions to protect against negative balance.

Position Modification
Adjusting Stop Loss
- Click the Edit icon on a position
- Modify Stop Loss value
- Click Save
Or drag the SL line on the chart.
When to Adjust:
- ✅ Move to breakeven after initial profit
- ✅ Trail stops in trending markets
- ✅ Tighten before major news
- ❌ Never widen to avoid losses
Adjusting Take Profit
- Click Edit on position
- Modify Take Profit value
- Click Save
When to Adjust:
- Extend TP if trend is strong
- Reduce TP if market is slowing
- Remove TP to let winners run (with trailing stop)
Partial Close
Close part of a position to lock in profits:
- Click position to expand
- Select Partial Close
- Enter volume to close (e.g., 0.5 of 1.0 lot)
- Click Close
Strategy Example:
Position: 1.0 lot EURUSD, +100 pips
Action: Close 0.5 lots (+$500 locked)
Result: 0.5 lots remaining, running
Stop: Move to breakeven on remainingScaling In and Out
Scaling In (Adding to Position)
Add to winning positions:
- Place new order in same direction
- Adjust combined stop loss
- Recalculate total risk
Example:
Initial: 0.5 lots at 1.1000, SL 1.0950
Price moves to 1.1050 (in profit)
Add: 0.5 lots at 1.1050, SL 1.1000
Total: 1.0 lot, average entry 1.1025Only add to winners, never losers. Adding to losing positions (averaging down) increases risk exponentially.
Scaling Out (Reducing Position)
Gradually exit to lock profits:
- At first target, close 50%
- Move stop to breakeven
- Let remaining position run
- Close at final target or trailing stop
Example:
Entry: 1.0 lot at 1.1000
Target 1 (1.1050): Close 0.5 lots = +$250
Move SL to 1.1000 (breakeven)
Target 2 (1.1100): Close 0.5 lots = +$500
Total profit: $750Portfolio Risk Management
Total Exposure Limits
Set maximum exposure rules:
| Rule | Example | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Max positions | 5 concurrent | Prevent overtrading |
| Max per symbol | 2% of account | Concentration risk |
| Max total risk | 6% of account | Total portfolio risk |
| Max drawdown | 10% monthly | Capital preservation |
Calculating Portfolio Risk
1Total Risk = Sum of (Position Size × Stop Distance × Pip Value)
2
3Example:
4Position 1: 0.5 lot EURUSD, 50 pip SL = $250 risk
5Position 2: 0.3 lot GBPUSD, 40 pip SL = $120 risk
6Position 3: 0.2 lot USDJPY, 60 pip SL = $130 risk
7Total Portfolio Risk: $500
8
9If Account = $10,000
10Risk Percentage: 5%Correlation Awareness
Understand how positions relate:
Positive Correlation:
- EURUSD and GBPUSD often move together
- Long both = amplified exposure
Negative Correlation:
- EURUSD and USDCHF often move opposite
- Long EURUSD + Long USDCHF = hedged
Uncorrelated:
- EURUSD and Gold
- More diversified exposure
Use the Correlation Matrix in Analytics → Tools to see how your positions relate to each other.
Monitoring Performance
Key Performance Metrics
| Metric | Meaning | Good Benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Win Rate | % of winning trades | > 50% |
| Risk:Reward | Average R:R ratio | > 1:2 |
| Profit Factor | Gross profit / Gross loss | > 1.5 |
| Max Drawdown | Largest peak-to-trough | < 20% |
| Sharpe Ratio | Risk-adjusted returns | > 1.0 |
| Expectancy | Expected value per trade | > 0 |
Expectancy Formula
1Expectancy = (Win Rate × Average Win) - (Loss Rate × Average Loss)
2
3Example:
4Win Rate: 55%
5Average Win: $200
6Loss Rate: 45%
7Average Loss: $100
8
9Expectancy = (0.55 × $200) - (0.45 × $100)
10Expectancy = $110 - $45 = $65 per tradePerformance Charts

Portfolio Strategies
Diversification
Spread risk across:
Asset Classes:
- Forex
- Indices
- Commodities
- Stocks
Currencies:
- Don't be all USD-based
- Mix major, minor, exotic pairs
Timeframes:
- Some short-term trades
- Some swing trades
- Reduces correlation
Position Sizing Methods
Fixed Lot Size
Same size every trade.
Every trade: 0.1 lots
Simple but doesn't account for volatilityFixed Dollar Risk
Same dollar amount at risk.
Risk per trade: $200
Lot size varies based on stop distanceFixed Percentage
Same percentage of account.
Risk per trade: 2% of equity
Scales with account sizeRecommended: Fixed percentage (1-2%) for consistent risk.
The 2% Rule
Never risk more than 2% of account per trade:
Account: $10,000
Max risk: $200 per trade
Max positions: 3 at once
Total max risk: $600 (6%)Rebalancing Your Portfolio
When to Rebalance
- After significant wins/losses
- When correlation changes
- Monthly or quarterly review
- Market conditions change
Rebalancing Steps
- Review positions - Are they still valid?
- Check exposure - Overweight any sector?
- Assess correlation - Too much overlap?
- Adjust sizes - Reduce oversized positions
- Close losers - Cut losses, let winners run
Portfolio Protection
Circuit Breakers
Set automatic trading stops:
- Daily loss limit - Stop after $X loss
- Trade limit - Max trades per day
- Consecutive losses - Stop after N losses
Configure in: Settings → Risk Management → Circuit Breakers
Hedging
Reduce exposure with opposite positions:
Current: Long 1.0 lot EURUSD
Hedge: Short 0.5 lot EURUSD
Net: Long 0.5 lot EURUSDSome brokers don't allow hedging on same account. Check your broker's policy. Also consider correlation hedges (e.g., long EURUSD, long USDCHF).
Defensive Position Management
Before major events:
- Reduce position sizes
- Tighten stops
- Consider closing risky trades
- Keep higher margin level

Common Portfolio Mistakes
1. Overtrading
Problem: Too many positions, can't manage them all Solution: Set maximum concurrent positions (3-5)
2. Concentration Risk
Problem: All positions in same direction/market Solution: Diversify across assets and directions
3. Ignoring Correlation
Problem: Similar positions amplify risk Solution: Check correlation before adding positions
4. No Position Sizing
Problem: Random lot sizes, inconsistent risk Solution: Use fixed percentage risk method
5. Emotional Decisions
Problem: Closing winners early, holding losers Solution: Set rules, follow them, journal everything

Need Help?
Portfolio management cannot eliminate trading risk. Diversification reduces but doesn't eliminate the possibility of losses. Trade only with money you can afford to lose.
